Motherboard
A motherboard is the heart of a computer, made out of PCB (Printed Circuit Board) it is a complex electronic system. It goes by many names like system board, planar board, baseboard, mainboard or just plainly mobo. Much like a Backplane, a motherboard provides electrical connections by which other components communicate, but unlike a backplane it carries a CPU and other subsystems like the RTC (Real Time Clock) and BIOS.
Your average desktop system is built with a microprosessor, physical memory, and other essential components on the motherboard. Every component of your computer runs through the motherboard making it the "hub" for all your components. There are many forms of a motherboard, from proprietary ones put forth by companies such as Dell and Compaq, to standard from factors such as ATX, Mini-ATX, Nano-ATX and so on. A motherboards capabilities are determined by what components its been paired with. These chips as they are called govern electrical current as well as data that is transmitted through the different features of the motherboard.
Most motherboards produced today are designed for so-called IBM compatible computers, which has held over 96% of the global PC market the past few years.
