For example, the world of industrial computers is changing with the appearance of Intel's 2nd Generation Core i7/i5/i3 processors and their corresponding chipsets. These processors are approximately 17% faster clock-for-clock and the integrated graphics provide approximately twice the performance as compared to their 1st Generation counterparts. With a life span of AT LEAST 5~7 years in the industrial and embedded market, there is enough computing power there keep you up and running for years to come.
As many of you may already be aware, the CPU market is constantly changing. As new processors, chipsets and technologies emerge, some of the older processors, chipsets and technologies are discontinued. Through market research, Intel®, AMD® and VIA® are well aware of what their hottest selling CPU's are. Using this information, some of the lesser used products are discontinued and replaced with similar products. Intel® will also move some of their more popular and highest selling products to the embedded division, extending the life of that product to have a 7+ year manufacturing availability. Although Intel® does give ample notice of the availability of their discontinued products, these products become harder to find and are sometimes less cost effective than using the longer life item.
